Easy Weekend Getaways From Charlotte

By Helen Adams Realty - June 16, 2026

As much as we love the Queen City with its bustling breweries, gorgeous greenways, and thriving food scene, sometimes you need to pack a bag, hit the highway, and escape the daily grind for a few days. The beauty of living in Charlotte is its prime location. Whether you are craving crisp mountain air, a charming historic downtown, or the soothing sound of ocean waves, you can find it all within a short drive.

Here are six incredible weekend getaways outside of Charlotte, all under four hours away, perfect for your next road trip!

The Magic Of The Mountains

Asheville, NC: Nestled deeply in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is the ultimate playground for foodies, art lovers, and nature enthusiasts alike.

Boone & Blowing Rock, NC: If you want true high-country alpine vibes, the twin mountain towns of Boone and Blowing Rock deliver dramatic long-range views and crisp, cool air year-round.

The Urban Main Street

Greenville, SC: Greenville has mastered the art of the perfect mid-sized southern city, swapping out overwhelming skyscrapers for a gorgeous, tree-lined main street and a literal waterfall in the middle of downtown.

  • Drive Time From Charlotte: ~1 hour, 45 minutes (Southwest via I-85)
  • Vibe: Trendy, walkable, and family-friendly
  • What To Do: Walk across the suspension bridge at Falls Park on the Reedy to see the waterfalls, rent an e-bike to cruise the 22-mile Swamp Rabbit Trail, and hunt for the "Mice on Main" bronze sculptures.

Winston-Salem, NC: For a quicker drive with a heavy dose of history and arts, Winston-Salem offers a fascinating blend of old-world Moravian roots and trendy, repurposed industrial spaces.

  • Drive Time From Charlotte: ~1 hour, 15 minutes (North via I-77 to I-40)
  • Vibe: Historic, industrial-chic, and deeply creative
  • What To Do: Step back into the 1700s at Old Salem Museums & Gardens (and buy fresh Moravian sugar cake), then fast-forward to the present by exploring the ultra-modern Innovation Quarter and the murals in the Arts District.

The Coastal Escape

Sullivan's Island, SC: Tucked right next to Charleston, Sullivan’s Island offers a much quieter, more neighborhood-centric beach vibe than its bustling neighbors, making it an idyllic spot to completely unplug.

  • Drive Time From Charlotte: ~3 hours, 15 minutes (South via I-77 to I-26)
  • Vibe: Laid-back, historic, and sun-drenched
  • What To Do: Relax on the wide, uncrowded sandy beaches, tour the Revolutionary War-era Fort Moultrie, and bicycle past stunning, historic beachfront properties.

Southport & Oak Island, NC: Known as one of coastal North Carolina’s most beautiful hidden gems, Southport’s massive live oaks and historic waterfront feel like stepping onto a movie set (which makes sense, considering Safe Haven and A Walk to Remember were filmed here).

  • Drive Time From Charlotte: ~4 hours (East via US-74)
  • Vibe: Picturesque, maritime-classic, and cinematic
  • What To Do: Walk the Southport Riverwalk to watch ships navigate where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic, browse the antique shops along Howe Street, and take the 10-minute drive over the bridge to Oak Island for uncrowded, wide-open beaches and a climb up the Oak Island Lighthouse.

Whether you decide to head up into the peaks, explore a new downtown, or sink your toes into coastal sand, a refreshing change of pace is sitting just a few hours past Charlotte's city limits.
